China’s Light Truck Sales Surge 34% in February, Led by Foton and EV Makers
China’s light truck market posted a sharp 34% increase in sales in February compared with the same month a year ago, reaching 153,100 units, according to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM). The strong performance marked the second-highest February total in the past decade.
Overall truck sales in China rose 30% year-over-year to 279,100 units in February. Light trucks remained the dominant segment, accounting for more than half of total sales. Heavy trucks also saw a solid uptick, with sales growing 36% year-over-year.
Foton led the light truck segment, selling 33,700 units and capturing 22% of the market. Other top performers included Great Wall (17,300 units), Changan (13,700), Dongfeng (12,800), JAC (12,600), and Xinyuan Auto (10,300). JMC and Sinotruk followed closely, each with more than 8,800 units sold. The top 10 brands collectively held over 85% of the light truck market.
Electric vehicle manufacturers saw some of the most significant gains. BYD recorded a 9,644% year-on-year increase in February sales, while Geely’s EV brand Farizon rose 139%. Sinotruk was up 92%, followed by Foton and Great Wall, both rising 65%, and FAW Jiefang, up 76%.
Compared to January, the market saw shifts in brand rankings. Great Wall moved up to second place, Dongfeng climbed to fourth, and Xinyuan advanced to sixth. Farizon entered the top 10 for the first time. Foton, Changan, and JMC maintained their previous positions at first, third, and seventh, respectively.
New energy trucks continued to expand their market presence. In the first two months of 2025, light truck sales totaled 300,300 units, a 9% increase year-over-year. Farizon and BYD led growth with sales increases of 104% and 3,941%, respectively. Foton, Great Wall, and Sinotruk also exceeded the segment’s average growth rate.
BYD’s market share grew by 2.36 percentage points over the same period last year, followed by Foton, Farizon, and Sinotruk, all recording notable gains.
With March and April typically marking the peak season for commercial vehicle sales in China, industry analysts are watching to see if this growth trend continues.
