FAW Jiefang Leads China's Truck Market with 26.9% Share in First 4 Months
From January to April 2025, China’s commercial vehicle market continued to recover. Sales of medium and heavy trucks reached 169,000 units, up 8.4% year-on-year. Traditional fuel trucks remained stable, while new energy trucks grew quickly, showing a clear trend of dual-track development.
Traditional Fuel Trucks: Jiefang Still No. 1
In the traditional fuel truck market, five major brands—FAW Jiefang, Sinotruk, Dongfeng, Shaanxi Auto, and BAIC—accounted for 86% of total sales.
Jiefang ranked first with about 35,000 units sold and a 26.9% market share. Dongfeng followed with 21.4%, growing 3.8% compared to last year. Sinotruk ranked third with 19.2%, showing a slight drop.
Vehicle Types: Intense Competition Across All Segments
Tractor Trucks (Traditional + NEV): Jiefang took the lead with 27,000 units and 25.9% market share. Sinotruk and Shaanxi Auto followed.
Natural Gas Trucks: Jiefang sold around 18,000 units, leading with a 29.9% share. Sinotruk had 20.5%, and Dongfeng had 18.4%.
Cargo Trucks: Jiefang (29%), Dongfeng (27%), and Sinotruk (18.5%) were the top three.
New Energy Trucks: SANY, XCMG, and Jiefang on the Rise
The new energy truck market grew fast. The top three—SANY, XCMG, and Jiefang—together sold about 17,000 units, taking over half the market.
SANY ranked first with 16.7%, XCMG followed with 15.3%, and Jiefang ranked third with 13.8%. But Jiefang’s growth was the fastest, rising 7.2% year-on-year.
In the new energy tractor truck segment, Jiefang was No.1 with a 15.7% market share, up 8.2% from last year. In April alone, Jiefang reached a 17% share, keeping its lead.
Regional Markets: Jiefang’s Base Area Strategy Pays Off
Jiefang kept strong in its key regions, ranking No.1 in eight major markets: Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, East China (Jiangsu-Shanghai), Shandong, Central China, Shanxi-Inner Mongolia, Henan, Northeast Inner Mongolia, and Heilongjiang-Jilin.
For example, in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region, Jiefang sold 6,396 trucks with a 26% market share.
Dongfeng gained ground with hybrid and hydrogen fuel trucks, reaching a 21.4% market share and launching hydrogen models in pilot cities.
Shaanxi Auto’s tractor truck share dropped to 14.4% due to gas price changes, but its “gas truck + battery swap station” model still worked well in Northwest China.
In early 2025, China’s truck market showed steady growth for heavy-duty trucks and signs of recovery for light trucks. New energy trucks continued to grow fast.
Jiefang stayed on top with strong performance across all segments. But the competition is heating up. Dongfeng and Sinotruk are pushing forward, and SANY and XCMG are expanding quickly in the new energy space.
As the market shifts, government policy and tech innovation will drive the next stage of growth. To stay ahead, truck makers need to focus on key segments and improve their new energy products.
