In July 2025, domestic tractor truck sales surged by 32% year-on-year, reaching 35,000 units, marking the fourth consecutive month of growth. Following this, the total sales of tractor trucks in the first seven months of 2025 showed a 20% year-on-year increase, with an additional 38,000 units sold compared to the same period last year.
July Sales Breakdown
In July, 35,000 units of tractor trucks were sold domestically, a decrease of 8% compared to June but an increase of 32% year-on-year. The growth rate slowed compared to June's 49% increase but was still 8,400 units higher than July 2024. Overall, heavy-duty truck sales saw a 39% year-on-year increase, with tractor trucks' growth rate trailing by 7 percentage points.
Tractor trucks accounted for approximately 54.41% of total heavy-duty truck sales in July, slightly down from June's 54.97%, but still higher than the 53.10% share in 2024. Despite the relatively low sales figure for July, which typically sees slower market activity for heavy-duty trucks, it is the third-highest sales figure in the past five years, after 2020's record of 68,100 units.
Leading Brands: FAW Jiefang, SANY, XCMG Show Strong Growth
FAW Jiefang led the market in July with 8,373 units sold, maintaining its position as the top seller. FAW was followed by China National Heavy Duty Truck (6,964 units) and Foton Motors (5,527 units). Dongfeng Motor and Shaanxi Auto ranked 4th and 5th with over 4,000 units sold each.
In July, the top 12 brands saw significant growth, with XCMG, SANY, and JAC Motors doubling their sales, growing by 270%, 213%, and 156%, respectively. Foton, Shaanxi, and North Benz Trucks saw increases of 68%, 41%, and 34%, respectively, outpacing the overall market growth.
Market Share and Sales Trends
The top 10 tractor truck brands accounted for 96.55% of the market share in July, with FAW Jiefang leading at 23.91%, followed by China National Heavy Duty Truck (17.03%), Foton (15.78%), Dongfeng (12.97%), and Shaanxi Auto (12.14%). The combined market share of the top five brands was 81.83%, highlighting the significant dominance of the leading players.
Compared to June, the rankings of the top 10 brands saw slight shifts, with Dongfeng moving up to 4th place, and North Benz Trucks climbing two spots to 8th. FAW, China National Heavy Duty Truck, Foton, and XCMG maintained their positions from June.
Year-to-Date Performance: Total Sales Up by 20%
In the first seven months of 2025, total tractor truck sales reached 227,100 units, a 20% increase from the same period last year. The growth rate improved by 1 percentage point compared to June's increase of 19%. Sales of electric and new energy tractor trucks continued to grow, with their market share steadily rising each month.
Shift in Powertrain Preferences
Gas-powered trucks, once the largest segment in the tractor truck market, saw a decline of over 20 percentage points year-on-year in their market share. In contrast, pure electric tractor trucks saw a significant rise, increasing by 20.96 percentage points. Diesel-powered tractors also grew by 23%, while methanol-powered trucks and fuel cell trucks saw mixed results.
Impact of New Energy Vehicles
New energy vehicles (NEVs) made up 31.32% of total tractor truck sales in the first seven months of 2025, significantly higher than last year's share of 17.43%. Among the leading brands, Foton, Shaanxi, and FAW Jiefang had new energy models accounting for over 20% of their sales, while XCMG, SANY, and Yuncheng Commercial Vehicles sold over 80% of their units as electric trucks.
As the tractor truck market continues to grow, particularly with the expansion of new energy vehicles, the ongoing competition among brands remains fierce. Despite a decline in gas-powered truck sales, the segment remains a key player in the market. The next five months will see the market continue to evolve with a focus on both new energy and gas-powered models.
