China’s Light Truck Market Records 7th Straight Month of Growth in August
China’s commercial vehicle market kept up its growth momentum in August 2025. Total sales reached 271,600 units, a 17% increase year on year. Light trucks, the largest segment of the market, accounted for 140,400 units, up 6% from last year. That marks the seventh straight month of year-on-year growth.
By segment, heavy trucks saw the sharpest rise, jumping 47%. Light trucks and mini trucks grew 6% and 15% respectively, while medium trucks slipped 9%. Between January and August, light truck sales totaled 1.31 million units, up 6% from a year earlier—slightly ahead of the overall truck market.
Although August is typically a slow month for sales, this year’s performance ranked as the third-highest August in the past decade, trailing only 2020 and one other peak year.
Company performance
Five manufacturers each sold more than 10,000 light trucks in August:
Foton: 33,800 units, 24.1% market share
Changan: 13,800 units, 9.9% share
Great Wall: 13,300 units, 9.5% share
JAC: 12,200 units, 8.7% share
Dongfeng: 11,500 units, 8.2% share
Together, the top ten players captured 87% of the market, with the top five accounting for just over 60%. JAC moved up to fourth place, while JMC climbed to seventh. Several companies—including Changan, Farizon, Sinotruk, and Xinyuan—posted double-digit growth.
January–August overview
From January to August, Foton led the market with 292,000 units sold, securing a 22% share. Great Wall, Changan, JAC, and Dongfeng each sold more than 100,000 units. Farizon and BYD delivered standout performances, surging 74% and 669% respectively.
In total, the light truck market sold 1.31 million units during the first eight months of the year, up 6% from the same period in 2024, representing an additional 76,600 units.
The sector has now notched seven consecutive months of growth, but whether that momentum can be sustained remains an open question.
