China’s Medium Truck Sales Jump 25% in March 2026

China’s medium truck market rebounded in March 2026, outperforming the broader truck sector as demand picked up during the traditional peak season.

Of this total, medium trucks accounted for 12,900 units, marking a 25% year-on-year increase and significantly exceeding overall market growth.

According to data from the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, total truck sales in China — including chassis and tractor units — stood at 440,000 units in March. This represents an 83% increase from February and a 12% rise compared with the same period last year.

Within this total, medium trucks (including chassis) recorded 12,900 units, up 58% month-on-month and 25% year-on-year, reversing a 5% decline seen in February.

Over the past five years, March sales in the medium truck segment have consistently exceeded 10,000 units. The March 2026 figure represents the second-highest level in that period, surpassing March 2025 by approximately 2,600 units, but remaining around 1,000 units below the March 2024 peak.

For the first quarter of 2026, cumulative medium truck sales reached 35,100 units, the highest level in five years. This marks an increase of approximately 5,700 units year-on-year, with overall growth of 19%, up from 16% recorded after February.

Diverging Performance Among Manufacturers

Despite the overall market expansion, performance among manufacturers varied.

Among the top 10 companies, six reported growth while four recorded declines.

FAW TRUCKS, Foton Motor, Tri-Ring Group, and Weichai New Energy reported year-on-year increases of 69%, 216%, 692%, and 91%, respectively, all outperforming the market average.

SHACMAN posted 20% growth, while Dongfeng Motor Corporation recorded a modest 2% increase.

However, several manufacturers experienced notable declines, with the steepest drop reaching 63%, underscoring uneven performance across the market.

Market Concentration Remains High

Market concentration remained elevated in March, with the top 10 manufacturers accounting for 98.8% of total sales, while the top five captured 85.2%.

FAW TRUCKS retained its leading position with 4,638 units sold, representing a 36.0% market share.

Foton Motor ranked second with 1,981 units and a 15.4% share.

JAC Motors, Dongfeng Motor Corporation, and Sinotruk placed third to fifth, respectively.

Other manufacturers, including Tri-Ring Group, BYD, and Isuzu China, each recorded sales exceeding 400 units, with relatively narrow gaps among lower-ranked players.

Strong First-Quarter Growth

For the January–March period, medium truck sales totaled 35,100 units, reflecting a 19% year-on-year increase.

Among the leading manufacturers, most reported growth. Notable performers included:

Sinotruk (+41%)

Tri-Ring Group (+801%)

SHACMAN (+67%)

Weichai New Energy (+182%)

Dongfeng Motor Corporation recorded a 7% increase, while several companies reported double-digit declines, with the largest drop reaching 28%.

Market Share in Q1

In cumulative terms, FAW TRUCKS led the market with 12,900 units sold, accounting for a 36.8% share.

Sinotruk, JAC Motors, and Dongfeng Motor Corporation followed in second to fourth place, while Foton Motor ranked fifth.

Other players, including Isuzu China, Tri-Ring Group, and BYD, maintained stable positions.

Compared with the same period in 2025, several manufacturers — notably FAW TRUCKS, Sinotruk, and Tri-Ring — expanded their market shares significantly.

Outlook

The medium truck segment recorded 12,900 units in March 2026, up 25% year-on-year, returning to a growth trajectory and remaining above the 10,000-unit threshold.

By the end of the first quarter, cumulative growth reached 19%, exceeding the overall truck market by 11 percentage points.

Whether the segment can sustain or further expand this lead in the coming months will depend on demand momentum in the coming months
