100% recyclable vehicles is possible
Ford Motor Co. said lastweek it is working with General Motors Corp. and Chrysler LLC to make cars and trucks as close to 100% recyclable as possible.
The Detroit automakers are working through the U.S. Council for Automotive Research's Vehicle Recycling Partnership to obtain that goal.
Already roughly 85% of a Ford vehicle is recyclable, the Dearborn automaker said.
"Ford has been implementing recycled content on our vehicles for several years," Dan Adsit, Ford's manager of recycling planning, said in a statement. "In addition to using significant amounts of recycled metals, we include nonmetallic recycled content in vehicle parts such as battery trays, splash shields, engine fan shrouds and carpet."
Ford cited Environmental Protection Agency statistics that say more than 95% of all end-of-life vehicles in America are processed for recycling -- compared with 52% of all paper and 31% of all plastic drink bottles.
More than one-third of all ferrous scrap in the nation's scrap processing industry comes from auto recycling, the automaker said.
