Driver Support now standard on Scania R440
(chinatrucks.com, Nov. 19, 2009)Scania has introduced Driver Support, its real-time in-cab driver coaching system, as standard on its new top-of-the-range R440 tractor unit.

Focusing on key factors that influence safety and economy, Scania Driver Support continually collects data via the vehicle's CANBus from the engine ECU, braking system and other sensors to monitor the driver's performance. It coaches the driver with advice and hints and makes an accumulated assessment of driving style, scoring the driver from one to five stars. Tips and scores are displayed in four categories in the instrument cluster: hill-driving, anticipation, brake use and gear selection (when the Opticruise gearbox is in manual mode).
At present, Driver Support can only be used in real-time by the driver, and resets itself after every trip. Scania is, however, planning to introduce a comms module allowing the data to be stored and forwarded for remote analysis, to help identify which areas of driver performance would benefit from more training.
