Iveco returns to Kenya in partnership with GMC to set up Sh2.3Bn plant

www.chinatrucks.com: Iveco industrial vehicles corporation has re-entered the Kenyan market after a ten-year absence. Iveco’s Business Director Africa and Middle East Fabio De Serafini says the company will introduce its light, medium and heavy vehicles which include off-road and on-road vehicles into the Kenyan market in partnership with Global Motors centre.
The Italian company is also planning to establish a Sh2.3 billion shilling manufacturing plant in Mombasa, which will allow it to locally assemble its various products starting July.
According to Serafini, the plant will ensure customers purchase vehicles at cheaper rates than they otherwise would have.
“The plant will create employment for about 500 to 600 people. This will include technicians and painters among others,” he said.
Global Motors Centre (GMC)will be responsible for the assembly and distribution of the brand’s full product range in the region.
GMC will offer tailor made and locally assembled trucks which include, but not limited to, IVECO Eurocargo range, IVECO Daily Van and Pick up range, IVECO Trakker Tipper and IVECO Trakker Prime Mover.
“The middle range vehicles are however predicted to do well with the 9 to 16 tonnes vehicles expected to receive good reception in Kenya,” Serafini said.
The soon to be launched plant will serve Kenya only with plans in place for the company to launch operations in Uganda and Rwanda in the short term.
“Our Ethiopian business, which deals with heavy duty vehicles mainly, is doing well and has recorded growth. We are expecting to sell about 1,400 units in Ethiopia this year, with such numbers expected in the Kenyan market in the future.”
The company also says that it will offer financial solutions to its customers through various channels such as Stanbic Bank, Iveco Capital and Italy’s SACE.
