IAA 2018: Scania to Present New Plug-in Hybrid Truck
Scania is planning on presenting their new plug-in hybrid truck at the IAA Commercial Vehicles in Hannover, and has announced that the HEV version without a plug will likely be presented in November, before they open the books next year.

The new hybrid trucks are based on Scania’s newest truck generation, combining a five cylinder motor with a 130 kW e-motor and a 7.4 kWh battery. They are mainly designed for delivery purposes and urban traffic, as well as construction work. The electric range is around 10 km.
Hybrid systems are viewed as a bridge technology at Scania, before battery-electric technology progressed to the point of hauling heavy loads. Furthermore, they are also still waiting for the development of improved battery technology and the necessary infrastructure. Product manager Jesper Brauer said the following on the subject: “We can see how most new truck solutions operating in urban areas will gradually migrate to full electrification in the next decade when the battery technology and the necessary infrastructure are in place. But until then our industry is in what I would call a transition period, where solutions like hybrids and alternative fuels – or a combination of the two, like our hybrid trucks – will offer the best solutions and reasonable total operating economy figures for real-world customers.”
