BAIC FOTON Opens Assembly Plant in Uganda
BAIC FOTON has officially launched its assembly plant in Kampala, Uganda, marking a significant step in the company’s strategy to expand in East Africa.
The plant, which was inaugurated during a brand launch event attended by Ugandan government officials and BAIC FOTON executives, is part of the company’s efforts to establish a stronger foothold in Uganda’s commercial vehicle market. The new facility will produce light trucks, medium-duty trucks, and buses, which are in high demand in the region.

Uganda, a landlocked country with a largely agricultural economy, has limited industrial development. The Ugandan government has promoted “import substitution” policies to encourage foreign companies to set up assembly operations in the country. BAIC FOTON, seizing this opportunity, has partnered with local enterprises to reduce production costs and better meet market demands.

At the launch event, several of BAIC FOTON’s flagship vehicles were showcased, and the company’s technical team provided details on each model’s performance. Government and business representatives marked the official start of operations by unveiling the plaque for the new facility.
Li Xiangdong, Vice General Manager of BAIC FOTON’s Heavy-Duty Truck Division, said the company plans to continue improving quality control and provide more efficient vehicle solutions for Ugandan customers. The company also signed strategic cooperation agreements with several local logistics and transportation companies during the event.

The new assembly plant is expected to create numerous jobs in Uganda, driving local economic development and supporting the country’s automotive sector modernization. BAIC FOTON has established a broad network across Africa, with over 220 sales and service outlets, 12 KD plants, 46 parts warehouses, and 8 training centers.
Looking ahead, BAIC FOTON plans to expand its operations in East Africa, focusing on the development of heavy-duty trucks, pickup trucks, and buses, and supporting sustainable transportation solutions across the continent. The company also intends to contribute to Uganda’s automotive industry development by promoting new energy vehicles and related infrastructure.
