FOTON at IAA 2026: From Selling Trucks Overseas to Building Local Operations
IAA Transportation 2026 kicked off in Hannover on September 14with a dedicated Press Day, bringing together major commercial vehicle manufacturers and suppliers from around the world. Among the Chinese exhibitors, FOTON stands out with its broadest-ever lineup.
FOTON is showcasing its largest-ever lineup at IAA Transportation, with seven complete vehicles and six key components on display. Under the theme “EASYMOVE,” FOTON is presenting more than just vehicles. The lineup covers products, technologies, energy solutions and services for Europe and other global markets. The lineup reflects a broader shift among Chinese commercial vehicle makers — from exporting vehicles to building local operations in overseas markets.
As the global commercial vehicle industry moves toward electrification and smarter technologies, FOTON’s presence at IAA is part of a broader shift in its international strategy.
Three Steps in FOTON’s European Strategy
At its first-day press conference, FOTON announced its European strategy, delivered its 13 millionth commercial vehicle worldwide, and made the overseas debut of the BEACON heavy-duty truck. Together, these moves show how FOTON’s international strategy is evolving — from entering new markets, to building a local presence, and then bringing new technologies to customers.
The launch of its European strategy marks another step in FOTON’s global expansion, from emerging markets into more developed and demanding markets.
FOTON’s European strategy focuses on three areas: local product adaptation, a zero-carbon ecosystem, and a localized value chain. This means FOTON is no longer satisfied with simply exporting mature products developed for China. Instead, it is adapting its products and services to European transport needs, regulations and customer requirements.
Another major milestone was reached in Europe with the delivery of FOTON’s 13 millionth commercial vehicle worldwide. The milestone was marked by the delivery of a GALAXUS R9 in Spain.

The milestone is the latest step in FOTON’s global expansion. In 2021, FOTON became the first Chinese commercial vehicle maker to surpass 10 million vehicles in cumulative production and sales, achieving what it calls “dual independence” in brands and core technologies. In 2025, its 12 millionth vehicle rolled off the production line at its plant in Brazil. In 2026, the 13 millionth vehicle was delivered in Europe.
Over five years, these milestones moved from South America to Europe, reflecting FOTON’s expansion into more developed and demanding markets. Choosing a premium heavy-duty truck for the milestone delivery in Europe also signals FOTON’s ambition to enter the European long-haul truck market.
The overseas debut of the CAVAN BEACON heavy-duty truck, meanwhile, serves as a showcase of FOTON’s technology capabilities.
The BEACON is a premium new-energy truck for medium- and long-haul transport. It is built on a platform that supports both electric and hydrogen power. The platform supports two power options and a wide range of transport applications. Up to 50% of its components are shared across the platform. With the global market still lacking a clear consensus on the long-term technology path for new-energy heavy trucks, FOTON’s decision to use one platform for both electric and hydrogen power is a practical approach.
FOTON is also showing several other vehicles at IAA Transportation. The CAVAN C1, GALAXUSR9, eGALAXUS D3 street sweeper, DAYSTAR light truck, TUNLANDV pickup truck and AUV bus are all making their international debut. It reflects a broader shift in FOTON’s overseas strategy — from exporting products, to building local supply chains, and now to developing local operations. It also gives FOTON a stronger presence in terms of products, market fit and brand visibility.
The BEACON also features a new electrical and electronic architecture, with an industry-first cross-domain design. This cross-domain design is intended to improve connectivity and coordination across the vehicle. Combined with the new body and chassis architecture, it gives the BEACON a stronger foundation for the next generation of intelligent commercial vehicles.

From Selling Trucks to Providing Complete Solutions
Transport conditions differ across markets, but fleet operators often have similar concerns. In Europe, customers pay close attention to total cost of ownership, vehicle uptime, regulatory compliance and service response times.
FOTON’s presence at IAA Transportation 2026 is more than a vehicle display. Alongside complete vehicles, the company is showcasing heavy-duty batteries, electric drive axles and megawatt charging equipment, as well as a zero-carbon transport system covering charging and battery swapping, fleet management and lifecycle services.
FOTON says its overseas sales have ranked first among Chinese commercial vehicle exporters for 15 consecutive years. Its products now reach more than 140 countries and regions, supported by 32 localized plants and 18 regional parts centers. These figures point to a broader global operating network covering product development and adaptation, supply chains, after-sales service and financial support. This reflects a broader change in the way Chinese commercial vehicle companies are expanding overseas. The focus is moving from exporting individual products to developing products for local markets and building local supply chains, services and energy ecosystems.
For Europe, however, the question is whether FOTON can adapt this model to stricter regulations and higher customer expectations. That will take time and continued investment to prove.
At the same time, competition in Europe’s new-energy heavy-truck market is becoming more intense. European truck makers are accelerating their shift to electric vehicles, narrowing the window for new entrants. To establish a position in the market, FOTON will need to compete on product performance, cost, ecosystem development and service response times.

FOTON’s appearance at Hannover is ultimately a statement of its broader global strategy. The company is showing that Chinese commercial vehicle makers can now offer more than products — they can bring technology, services and supporting ecosystems to overseas markets. After two decades of expansion in emerging markets, FOTON is now seeking a stronger position in more developed and demanding markets.
This transition will take time. But at Hannover, FOTON has made one thing clear: the competition is shifting from selling trucks to delivering complete solutions.
For the Chinese commercial vehicle industry, FOTON’s approach is worth watching. As global competition enters a new stage, individual product or technology advantages may no longer be enough. The ability to adapt to local markets and build local supply chains, service networks and energy ecosystems could become a key factor in determining the long-term global competitiveness of Chinese truck makers.
