Eaton Launches ELocker Differential in Europe Providing Enhanced Traction to GAZ Group LCVs

www.chinatrucks.com: Diversified industrial manufacturer Eaton Corporation has announced that it will supply its ELockerTM technology for the GAZelle Business and Sobol models from leading Russian commercial vehicles manufacturer GAZ Group. The two light commercial vehicles will feature Eaton’s electronic locking differential in both their rear-wheel-drive and 4x4 variants, supporting the driver with full axle lock when more traction is needed. For this application, Eaton’s ELocker system has been specifically engineered to meet the requirements Russia’s extreme winter temperatures, demanding terrains and diverse road conditions.

“We have worked very closely with GAZ to develop the ELocker application for its new GAZelle and Sobol models. With ELocker already being sold in the Americas, and now being launched in Russia, we are consistently proving that our system is capable of coping with the most extreme operating conditions,” said Deborah Kullman, vice president and general manager, Eaton Automotive Controls Division. “This is the first step to offering ELocker to other EMEA markets. We see a significant potential in this region to enhance traction and off-road capabilities, particularly for light commercial vehicles.”

ELocker is a maintenance-free design that operates as an open differential when not in use. In cases of minimal wheel slip at vehicle speeds of less than five km/h, the driver can request a full axle lock by pushing a button on the instrument panel, enabling easy engagement/ disengagement of ELocker.

Once activated, an electromagnetic coil activates a ramp mechanism that moves compression rods to constrain the side gear to the case, locking the differential. This leads to a 100 per cent axle lock, resulting in both wheels receiving all available engine power and all available traction to turn at the same speed. To disengage the system the driver either pushes the control button, or the system will be automatically disabled at 30 km/h. Once disengaged, the ELocker returns to its open state.

Eaton’s ELocker-system is already successfully in use in the Hummer H1, H2, and H3 SUVs and in the Fiat Adventure Series. It is suitable for front- and rear-wheel-drive applications and is maintenance free. Eaton also offers a comprehensive product portfolio of traction modifying devices for front, rear and all-wheel-drive vehicles including mechanical locking, electronic locking, electronic limited-slip and mechanical limited-slip systems.

In order to meet regional requirements, Eaton develops its torque control products on a global basis, with engineering facilities located in Marshall, Michigan (USA), Rastatt (Germany), Tczew (Poland), Pune (India) and Pyungtek (South Korea). Manufacturing locations include Tczew (Poland), Reynosa (Mexico) and Nebraska (USA).

ELocker demonstrates its capabilities during Russian ‘Silk Way’ rally

The ELocker system was successfully tested under extreme off-road conditions during a recent rally in Russia. A Sobol 4х4, equipped with Eaton’s ELocker served as one of the accompanying cars, carrying a group of journalists along the Russian ‘Silk Way’. Held in early July, the rally covered 2000 km from Moscow to Maikop. The route included various challenges including deep sands and mud. Eaton’s differential ensured the safe passage throughout, as the driver could rapidly lock the axle at any time.
