Weichai Enters into a Deal with Westport to Develop Natural Gas Engine
On August 29, Weichai signed a cooperation agreement with Canada-based Westport Fuel Systems in Jinan, Shandong. According to the agreement, the two parties will carry out cooperation on development natural gas engines with HPDI technologies.
By developing the most advanced natural gas engines in the world, it will further strengthen its overall competitiveness in the natural gas engine market in the global market.
HPDI will be applied on Weichai engines with the highest horsepower. Thus, the engine maker can improve its natural gas engine’s heat efficiency from 38% at present to 45%. In addition, with the new technology, the new natural gas engine can cut gas consumption by over 20%.
Soon, Weichai and Westport Fuel Systems will start developing the second generation HPDI technologies and realize the localized production of some key spare parts.
As a leading player in China’s engine market, Weichai has been involved in developing natural gas engines for over two decades. Currently, it boasts 70% of the natural gas engine market in China. By cooperating with Westport Fuel Systems, it aims to further strengthen its international competitiveness.
