WEICHAI, SINOTRUK Launch WP11A Engine in Nigeria with 100-Vehicle Order
Chinese engine manufacturer WEICHAI and commercial vehicle producer SINOTRUK have launched a new line of trucks powered by the Weichai WP11A engine in Nigeria, underscoring their efforts to expand in Africa’s fast-growing transportation and logistics sector.
The launch event, held in Abuja, also included the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement and a 100-vehicle order, highlighting growing market demand for heavy-duty transport solutions tailored to local operating conditions.

As Africa’s largest economy by population, Nigeria is investing heavily in transportation infrastructure, including roads, railways and port facilities, to support economic growth and rising trade activity. The expansion of these projects is driving demand for reliable freight transportation and construction equipment across the country.

However, transport operators continue to face significant challenges. Road networks in many regions remain underdeveloped, with vehicles frequently operating on unpaved roads and rough terrain. High temperatures, humidity and dust further increase the demands placed on vehicle powertrains and maintenance systems.

Against this backdrop, WEICHAI introduced the WP11A engine as a solution specifically designed for demanding operating environments in African markets.

The engine delivers a maximum torque of 1,700 N·m, around 13% higher than comparable products in its class, providing stronger performance for heavy-load transportation and hill-climbing operations. The enhanced power output helps improve operational efficiency on challenging road conditions commonly found across the region.

Durability was also a key consideration in the engine’s development. The WP11A features a high-strength engine block and modular architecture, with a B10 life of up to 1.2 million kilometers. The design is intended to support long-term reliability under conditions characterized by high heat, humidity and airborne dust.
Fuel efficiency remains a critical issue for fleet operators, particularly in markets where fuel costs represent a substantial share of operating expenses. According to WEICHAI, the WP11A incorporates advanced turbocharging technology and a low-energy auxiliary system, enabling fuel consumption that is up to 5% lower than comparable products under heavy-load, low-speed and stop-and-go operating conditions.
Beyond the product itself, WEICHAI has continued to expand its aftersales capabilities across the continent. The company currently operates 14 offices in Africa and maintains a service team of more than 100 professionals, providing technical support, spare parts supply and maintenance services to local customers.
The launch and initial order intake reflect growing acceptance of Chinese commercial vehicle and powertrain technologies in African markets. Industry observers note that Chinese manufacturers are increasingly moving beyond traditional product exports and focusing on localized service networks and long-term market support.

The project also reflects broader trends in China-Africa industrial cooperation. While collaboration has traditionally centered on large-scale infrastructure projects such as railways, highways and ports, partnerships are increasingly extending into manufacturing, equipment and core industrial technologies.
By combining WEICHAI’s powertrain technology with SINOTRUK’s commercial vehicle platform, the two companies aim to offer an integrated transportation solution for customers in Africa. The approach is expected to strengthen supply-chain resilience, improve operational efficiency and support the development of the region’s logistics sector.

As demand for transportation and infrastructure services continues to grow across Africa, WEICHAI said it will further expand cooperation with local partners, develop products tailored to regional requirements and support logistics modernization and infrastructure development in Nigeria and other African markets.
