CATL, short for Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited, is a global leader in the development and manufacturing of lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) and energy storage systems. Established in 2011 and headquartered in Ningde, China, CATL is renowned for its cutting-edge innovations and commitment to providing top-tier solutions and services for new energy applications worldwide.
CATL is dedicated to providing effective energy storage solutions for global green energy applications through advanced battery technology. It possesses R&D and manufacturing capabilities for power and energy storage battery as well as core technologies for whole industrial chain of materials, battery cells, battery system and battery recycling.
The company has achieved several significant milestones, including becoming the world’s largest supplier of EV batteries by both volume and market share. CATL’s high-energy density lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) batteries are celebrated for their superior performance, safety, and longevity. Notably, in 2023, CATL introduced the world’s first 4C supercharging LFP battery and made a major breakthrough with its sodium-ion battery technology, highlighting its leadership in battery innovation.
CATL operates six major research and development centers and thirteen battery manufacturing bases globally. Its Ningde, Yibin, and Liyang bases have been recognized as global lighthouse factories by the World Economic Forum, with the Yibin facility being the world’s first zero-carbon battery factory. The company also has subsidiaries in Munich, Paris, Yokohama, and Detroit.

As of the end of 2023, CATL employs 20,604 R&D personnel and has invested 18.4 billion RMB in research and development throughout the year. Its 21C Innovation Lab has become a leading center for advanced energy storage technology research. CATL holds and is applying for a total of 29,487 domestic and international patents.
According to SNE Research, CATL held a 36.8% global market share in power battery usage in 2023, ranking first worldwide for seven consecutive years from 2017 to 2023. Additionally, the company achieved a 40% market share in global energy storage battery shipments in 2023, maintaining the top position for three consecutive years.
