Dongfeng Opens Its First Dealership in Mexico
Dongfeng has officially opened its first dealership in Toluca, Mexico. This move marks a significant step for the Chinese automaker into the Mexican market. Dongfeng also plans to set up an assembly plant in Mexico by the end of 2025 to serve both Mexico and the broader Latin American market, with hopes of eventually expanding into the U.S. market.
Luis Felipe Túr de Coss Galson, Strategic Planning Director at Energon Motors, Dongfeng's Mexican distributor, stated that Mexico is in a strong growth phase due to the trend of "nearshoring." Dongfeng aims to open eight more dealerships in cities like Monterrey, Querétaro, Guanajuato, and Guadalajara by the end of this year and plans to add 25 to 30 more next year to cover major commercial areas.
Túr de Coss Galson also mentioned that the company expects to sell between 250 and 300 vehicles this year, with a goal of around 1,000 vehicles next year.
After conducting two years of market research, Dongfeng has decided to continue investing in Mexico. The expansion will happen in two stages: initially, Dongfeng will focus on selling two types of trucks—the Dongfeng GX and Dongfeng KX, each with an 8-ton capacity. Later, the company will introduce heavier models with up to 30 tons capacity. Dongfeng has also set up a parts warehouse in Querétaro with an initial investment of $3 million to support after-sales service.
The second stage involves building an assembly plant, which may be finalized by the end of next year. While the plant will primarily serve the Mexican market, Dongfeng hopes it will help the company be ready for future opportunities in the U.S. market.
Túr de Coss Galson summed up the company’s outlook: “The biggest opportunity in the Mexican market is nearshoring, and the Mexican auto industry has tremendous potential. As the second-largest market in Latin America after Brazil, Mexico is a key strategic focus for Dongfeng in the coming years.”
